Careful craftsmanship and lasting protection will ensure these coastal cabins endure the elements for many years to come.
Positioned in Phillip Island’s coastal township of Ventnor, Five Acres is a boutique accommodation project that unites contemporary design with durable, weather-resilient construction. Developed by owners Katie and Rom Lamaro in collaboration with Onsite Design and interior designer Belle Bright, the project comprises three architecturally designed cabins tailored to the region’s harsh environmental conditions.
Responding to a Coastal Climate
With exposure to high winds, salt spray, and intense sun, Five Acres was designed with durability at its core. Materials were carefully selected to perform in these conditions, balancing robustness with a refined, modern aesthetic. Timber cladding defines the external form of the cabins, while Tasmanian oak is used internally to create warm, textural spaces. Every design element was conceived to connect guests to the surrounding farmland while ensuring longevity and ease of maintenance.
Timber Protection with CUTEK®
To safeguard the timber elements from the extreme coastal environment, CUTEK® timber oils were used throughout the project. The penetrating formula protects timber from moisture-related issues such as splitting and warping while allowing the wood to naturally silver over time without compromising its strength. By choosing CUTEK®, the project team ensured the external timber cladding and detailing would maintain their performance and aesthetic with minimal maintenance — an essential consideration for exposed rural settings like Phillip Island.
Crafted with Purpose
Five Acres’ success is a result of a close collaboration between builder, designer, and client. Onsite Design’s construction expertise enabled the delivery of intricate detailing, including large-format glazing, bespoke joinery, and sheltered outdoor bathing areas that integrate seamlessly with the architecture. Every element was designed and built with precision, ensuring the project’s architectural integrity would endure the unique demands of the local climate.
Built for Endurance and Beauty
Timber, protected by CUTEK®, is central to Five Acres’ enduring character. Its ability to weather gracefully while retaining structural performance reflects the project’s philosophy: honest materials, expert craftsmanship, and a deep connection to place.
