  • Does CUTEK® ECO have the same properties as CUTEK® Extreme CD50?

Like CUTEK® Extreme CD50, CUTEK® ECO penetrates deeply into the timber to minimise splitting, cupping, and warping. It also stays permanently mobile inside the timber to repel and displace moisture. With each additional coat of CUTEK® ECO, this protection increases.

  • Can CUTEK® ECO be tinted with a CUTEK® Colourtone?

Yes, CUTEK® ECO can be tinted with a CUTEK® Colourtone and will offer a similar level of UV protection as with any of our other Colourtoned CUTEK® oils.

  • Does CUTEK® have an eco-friendly oil available?

All CUTEK® oils are environmentally safe and friendly for all exterior timber projects. CUTEK® ECO is specially formulated for architectural projects where a Green Star rating is desired.

  • What is the difference between CUTEK® Extreme CD50 and CUTEK® ECO?

CUTEK® Extreme CD50 is the core product we recommend for all exterior timber projects and is readily available in stores, however, CUTEK® ECO is has been developed for architectural projects where a Green Star rating is required.

  • Is CUTEK® ECO suitable for Green Star projects?

Yes, CUTEK® ECO is suitable for Green Star projects. CUTEK® ECO is specially formulated with a VOC 75g/litre (measured by EU Directive 2004/42/CE) and manufactured from approximately 60% recycled and bio-renewable materials.

  • Using CUTEK® on Acetylated Timber

Acetylated wood can be finished with CUTEK®, but due to the unique nature of the acetylation process, results may vary. To achieve the best outcome, we recommend using CUTEK® Eco or CUTEK® Euro rather than CUTEK® Extreme CD50 or CUTEK® Wood Preservative, as these copper-free formulations are less likely to react with any residual acid from the treatment process.

Because the acetylation process can introduce chemical variations, we can’t guarantee specific results. To ensure CUTEK® Eco or CUTEK® Euro is the right fit for your timber, we strongly recommend testing it on a small, inconspicuous area before starting your project.

  • How long can I store CUTEK® Colourtones for?

After use, CUTEK® Colourtones generally do not require storing because they are a one-use product. If the Colourtone can contents have solidified, do not use the Colourtone. Instead, dispose of the can and contents according to local regulations.

  • Why can't CUTEK® Extreme CD50 have UV protection when untinted?

As a clear oil, UV rays pass through CUTEK® Extreme CD50 to the timber, resulting in a silver patina after sun exposure. Adding a CUTEK® Colourtone reflects and deflects the sun’s UV rays off the timber.

  • Colour and Weathering

The colour and grain of timber can vary significantly. Wood coated with clear and/or Colourtoned CUTEK® timber oil can fade and weather at different rates when exposed to the weather.

CUTEK® is unable to offer any specific performance warranties in relation to colour retention for CUTEK® products because of many variables related to the weathering process including but not limited to: the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation, design and structure, aspect, differing exposure to the weather, method of application and adequacy of preparation.

Specially formulated Colourtones are available to mix with clear CUTEK® oils. This will help keep a freshly oiled look for longer while delaying silvering and maintaining the natural character of the wood.

To maintain the timber’s natural colour for longer, choose a CUTEK® Colourtone similar to the natural colour of the timber. Suggested CUTEK® Colourtones that match the natural hue of your timber can be found on our Colourtone page. Colourtones can also help alter your timber colour if required (e.g. make your timber look lighter or darker than its natural state).

When selecting from the range of colourtones allow for the wood colour to naturally lighten during the first three to eight months after application, as natural weathering and leaching occurs.

Order a free on our website or from you nearest reseller to make sure CUTEK® is right for your project.

New wood is milled smooth and often has a mill glaze which will greatly restrict the initial colour build. Better results can be achieved preparing your wood for coating using CUTEK® Restore and removing with a high-pressure washer. This will clean your timber and open the grain for the CUTEK® Colourtone.

Alternatively, greater colour intensity and durability can be achieved by mixing in double the recommended CUTEK® Colourtone for the can size (i.e., 2 CUTEK® Colourtones per 5 Litres). This will apply more pigment to the wood surface and increase the UV protection of your timber.

Colour will last longer on rusticated, or band sawn timbers, and may be maximised by including the Colourtone in all subsequent applications of CUTEK® oils. If your  CUTEK® Colourtoned wood has faded over time, wash the timber with CUTEK® QuickClean or CUTEK® Restore and apply a single coat of Colourtoned CUTEK® Extreme CD50 or CUTEK® Wood Preservative to restore the original look of the protected wood.

Wood that has weathered and greyed can be easily bought back to its original appearance by using CUTEK® Restore.

  • When should a colourtone be added to CUTEK® wood oils?

Un-tinted CUTEK® Extreme CD50 will quickly lighten/silver/grey with exposure to sunlight. Unless you want a clear finish that will naturally lighten/silver/grey off in a few months, it is important to mix in a CUTEK® Colourtones to CUTEK® oil before use. Adding CUTEK® Colourtones will provide UV colour protection and slows the lightening/silvering process.

NOTE: CUTEK® oils diffuse deeply into your timber and will continue to provide moisture protection and improve dimensional stability even if CUTEK® Colourtones are not added and your wood becomes weathered and greyed. To maintain your timber’s natural colour for longer, choose a CUTEK® Colourtone similar to the natural colour of your timber. Suggested CUTEK® Colourtones that match the natural hue of your timber can be found on our Colourtone product page. Colourtones can also help alter your timber colour if required (e.g. make your timber look lighter or darker than its natural state).

Order a free from our website or your local stockist to test if your chosen Colourtone is right for your project.

NOTE: CUTEK® is unable to offer any specific performance warranties in relation to colour retention for CUTEK® products because of many variables related to the weathering process including but not limited to: the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation, design and structure, aspect, differing exposure to the weather and adequacy of preparation.

  • I have new shingles – I want them to silver with age

Clear CUTEK® Extreme CD50 or CUTEK® Wood Preservative will protect your shingles while allowing them to naturally silver with age. Alternatively, you can mix in a “Grey Mist” CUTEK® Colourtone to silver the shingles from the beginning. DO NOT use CUTEK® oils on roofs that are used to collect drinking water.

  • Can I use CUTEK®exterior products on outdoor timber furniture?

Yes. The CUTEK® system is designed to highlight and protect the natural beauty of all timber applications. Our range of Step 1: Prepare products will clean and enhance the timber for application of our Step 2: Protect (Exterior) products that powerfully protect the timber. Adding a CUTEK® Colourtone will help maintain the natural colour of your timber or alter its appearance.

  • How long will CUTEK® timber oil last? How often will I have to reapply?

CUTEK® timber oils should be reapplied when the wood is no longer beading or as frequently as necessary to retain the natural or altered colour of the wood. Timing will diifer depending on many variables including the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation, design, aspect, weathered exposure and adequacy of preparation.

When considering frequency of maintenance there are two factors to consider:

    1. Protection: CUTEK® Extreme CD50 and CUTEK® Wood Preservative diffuse deeply into wood to provide, long-term, accumulative, inside out protection. Even when the timber surface has greyed and weathered, CUTEK® timber oils remain permanently mobile in the timber, meaning protection is not compromised even if the outward appearance of the wood has changed. Each additional coat of CUTEK® timber oil provides further additional protection against moisture.
    2. Appearance: To maintain the natural colour of freshly oiled wood for longer or alter the appearance of your timber, a CUTEK® oil with an added CUTEK® Colourtone should be applied. Over time and with exposure to sunlight and UV, the colour will slowly fade to a silver patina. Colour durability and the rate at which this fading occurs is dependent on many factors such as age and porosity of the wood, species, situation, design, aspect, and degree of exposure to the weather. CUTEK® timber oil should be reapplied as frequently as necessary to maintain desired colour vibrancy.

  • Can CUTEK® Wiping Stain be overcoated with other products?

It is not recommended to use other products over CUTEK® Wiping Stain. Compatibility with non-CUTEK® products is not guaranteed. Always overcoat with CUTEK® Interior.

  • Can I apply a maintenance coat of CUTEK® Wiping Stain?

No. Maintenance coats of the Wiping Stain are not required. For maintenance, lightly sand and apply a coat of CUTEK® Interior. If a colour change is needed, sand back completely and reapply the Wiping Stain followed by CUTEK® Interior.

  • What is the spreading rate of CUTEK® Wiping Stain?
    • New timber: 10–25 m²/L
    • Old or rough timber: 5–15 m²/L

Rates vary depending on surface porosity, condition, and application method.

  • How long does CUTEK® Wiping Stain take to dry and cure?
    • Touch dry: Several hours
    • Full cure: Up to 2 days
    • Wait 2 days before applying CUTEK® Interior

Protect the surface until fully cured.

  • How should CUTEK® Wiping Stain be applied?
    1. Stir thoroughly before and during application.
    2. Apply to clean, dry, smoothly sanded timber.
    3. Use a paint pad, brush, or roller.
    4. Only one coat should be applied, ensuring no pooling.
  • Can I apply more than one coat of CUTEK® Wiping Stain?

No. CUTEK® Wiping Stain is non-permeable, so a second coat will not penetrate into the timber and will result in an uneven appearance. It is designed for single-coat application only, followed by overcoating with CUTEK® Interior to achieve a matt finish.

  • How do I prepare timber before applying CUTEK® Wiping Stain?
    • Bare timber: Sand with 180–240 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain and clean with mineral turpentine.
    • Previously coated timber: Fully remove old coatings, sand with 180 -240 grit, and clean thoroughly.

Always test your tinted stain on a small area first to ensure the desired result.

  • Can I use CUTEK® Wiping Stain as a stand-alone stain?

No, CUTEK® Wiping Stain must be overcoated with CUTEK® Interior. On its own, the stain has a sheen. CUTEK® Interior provides a matt finish similar to CUTEK® oils and also delivers long-lasting durability and resistance.

  • What timber surfaces is CUTEK® Wiping Stain suitable for?

CUTEK® Wiping Stain is suitable for:

    • Timber doors
    • Cladding and panelling
    • Ceilings
    • Beams
    • Interior window joinery
    • Furniture

Note: It is not recommended for timber flooring or food preparation surfaces.

  • Can CUTEK® Wiping Stain be used outdoors?

CUTEK® Wiping Stain is not intended for exterior use but may be used on outdoor timber that is completely protected from UV and rain, provided it is overcoated with CUTEK® Interior. This ensures both durability and a matt finish, as the stain itself has a sheen.

  • What is CUTEK® Wiping Stain used for?

CUTEK® Wiping Stain is a solvent-based stain designed for interior timber surfaces, allowing you to replicate the tone of CUTEK® exterior oils that have been combined with CUTEK® Colourtones. CUTEK® Wiping Stain must be overcoated with 2–3 coats of CUTEK® Interior to provide durability, a matt finish, and chemical resistance.

  • How long does the anti-slip effect of CUTEK® Anti-Slip last, and how is it maintained?

Durability depends on foot traffic and exposure. In high-use areas, performance may diminish over time. When this happens:
    – Fully remove the old coating
    – Reapply one or two coats as needed
This will restore the anti-slip effect to the desired level.

  • What surfaces should I avoid applying CUTEK® Anti-Slip on?

    Do not apply it to:
    – Surfaces in direct contact with foodstuffs
    – Surfaces in direct contact with the ground
    – Situations involving full immersion in water
It is water-resistant, but not immersion-rated.

  • Is CUTEK® Anti-Slip suitable for surfaces other than wood?

No. CUTEK® Anti-Slip is formulated exclusively for timber surfaces. It is not intended for use on other materials such as concrete, composites, metal, or plastics.

  • How do I apply CUTEK® Anti-Slip?
    1. Add the full contents of CUTEK® Anti-Slip Grit into the liquid.
    2.  Mix thoroughly for 2 minutes using a power drill with a suitable mixing attachment.
    3. Apply with a brush or roller at a coverage rate of 6–10 m² per litre.
    4. Stir frequently to maintain even dispersion of the grit.
    5. Allow up to 48 hours for full curing, even if the surface feels dry sooner.
    6. Protect the area during this time to ensure proper curing and performance.
  • Once mixed, how long does CUTEK® Anti-Slip remain usable?

After mixing with the grit, the product must be used within 8 hours. To ensure consistent application and performance, it must be regularly stirred using a power drill with a suitable mixing attachment throughout the application process.

  • Can I achieve a P4 slip rating with just one coat of CUTEK® Anti-Slip?

Yes. One coat of CUTEK® Anti-Slip can achieve a P4 slip rating on most timber surfaces, including both CUTEK®-coated and bare timber. However, two coats are recommended in high-traffic areas to extend the life of the anti-slip properties.

  • Can I apply CUTEK® Anti-Slip over bare timber?

Yes. While CUTEK® Anti-Slip was designed for use on CUTEK® coated timber, it can also be used on bare timber surfaces. One or two coats may be required to achieve a P4 slip rating. Always ensure the timber is clean and dry before application and test for correct adhesion.

  • What is CUTEK® Anti-Slip and where is it used?

CUTEK® Anti-Slip is a clear, film-forming coating that enhances the slip resistance of timber surfaces. It is specifically designed to work over CUTEK® oil-coated timber once the oil has fully cured, achieving a P4 slip rating with minimal effort. However, it will also work effectively on other timber types with one or two coats, depending on substrate condition. It’s ideal for decks, stairs, ramps, and walkways.
